Where do these readings come from?

The live humidity and temperature figures come from Open-Meteo, a free, open weather service. It blends observations and forecast models from national weather services (including the European ECMWF model) into a current reading for each city’s coordinates, updated roughly every 15 minutes. They are outdoor, city-level figures — not a sensor in your street or your home — and your browser fetches them directly when the page opens. Until they load, or if the service is unreachable, the page shows each city’s typical humidity and temperature instead. Indoor rooms usually follow outdoor humidity closely unless they are sealed and dried; for your own room, a hygrometer is the only true reading. “Damp risk” is our plain-language reading of the outdoor figure: 70% and above is high for an unconditioned room.

What is relative humidity?

Relative humidity (RH) is how much water vapour the air holds compared with the most it could hold at that temperature, as a percentage. At 100% the air is saturated and water condenses on surfaces. Warm air holds more water, so the same moisture reads as a lower RH when a room warms up and a higher RH when it cools at night.

What is the dew point and why does it matter?

The dew point is the temperature at which air becomes saturated and water starts condensing. When any surface — an air-conditioned wall, a window, the back of a wardrobe — is colder than the room’s dew point, it gets wet. Wet surfaces are where mould starts, so a lower dew point means fewer damp spots.
